Okay, now that you have your schedule, pencil in time to walk, run, bike, dance, do jumping jacks (whatever activity will get you moving). I don't care if it is 5 minutes a day to start, but schedule it! If you want to feel better and have more energy it is time to get moving!
You CAN do it! You can add exercise into your daily routine whether you are a person who works around the clock or if you are an out of shape couch potato with little energy. Write down the activity you will participate in and the length of time. Put it on your calendar, in your phone, or on a task in your computer so you will be reminded daily!
Now is the time for MOVEMENT! You can succeed!

Alternative Health Solutions (AHS) is moving to Southern California. Our office will be closed beginning June 14th with plans to re-open August 14th! Thank you for your business and support! Weight Gain (or inability to loss weight)

The thyroid gland regulates our metabolism and temperature (among other things). Hence, when it is under active we are fatigued, have low body temperature, and tend to gain weight. When it is overactive our heart races, we become heat intolerant, and have significant weight loss. In order to properly maintain thyroid health we need to make certain we are receiving proper amounts of minerals, especially iodine.
Iodine is readily found in iodized salt, natural sea salt, and in seaweed/kelp products. Iodine is also found in many vegetables if the soil has proper amounts of iodine in it (near an ocean). Most hypothyroidism is found in areas where there is only fresh water since iodine comes from the ocean. Hence, Michigan, being surrounded by fresh water, is one of the leading states for hypothyroidism (considered the Goiter Belt). It is very important to have proper amounts of iodine in our diet for our bodies make its own thyroid hormones.
There are recommended Iodine Supplements and Thyroid Supplements (combinations of herbs, minerals, and/or glandulars) which promote thyroid health available at your local health food store; however, I do not recommend anyone taking iodine or thyroid products without first speaking with their health care provider.
I recommend two easy to read books written by Dr. David Brownstein: “Salt Your Way to Health” and “Iodine, Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It.” If you have thyroid concerns these are excellent resources.
Last, but not least stress plays a significant role in a properly functioning thyroid. We all need to "take a moment" (thanks to my dear friend Patty) every day and relax. Even 5 minutes of deep breathing and stretching can impact your body significantly. Try to make it a point to laugh everyday...this is also a good stress relief.

August is here and those with kids are gearing up for school! Unfortunately, in most communities, school-age children are the first age group to get the flu and then bring it home and to places where they interact with other kids. With the new viral strains on the rise and threat of swine flu how can we protect ourselves?
1. STRESS will wear down your immune system. So organize you and your children’s lives now. Stick to a schedule and do not overbook yourselves. It is good to remain active, but make sure there is down time for your body to relax.
2. EAT a diet full of fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Plan in advance to send kids with healthy snacks for after school sports and recreation. Sugar will immensely hinder the immune system to respond so steer clear from high sugar snacks.
3. IMMUNIZATIONS may be ineffective! There have been numerous studies showing the flu shot is not effective. Be careful! Do not take a flu shot containing thimersol (or mercury), and be informed before you decide to immunize you or your children!
WHAT IF I GET THE FLU? If you get the flu or cold symptoms immediately start supporting your immune system with Vitamin C, Bilberry, Astragalus, Echinacea, Goldenseal or other immune system boosters. The quicker you fortify your immune system the more likely you will recover sooner.
Your body was made to be able to fight off invaders. Help your body help itself by following these simple rules when preparing for Back To School!
