Let's talk about hormones...

Hi there and welcome to my blog!

My first discussion will focus on natural hormone replacement therapy. What is it? It is replacing hormones using hormones that identically match what our bodies naturally produce. They are derived from precursors of soy and yam plants. There are many different names associated with natural hormone replacement therapy: bio-identical hormones, compounded hormones, plant-based hormones, and customized hormones.

What makes natural hormones different from "conventional" hormones? Most (not all) conventional hormones are synthetic...not biochemically identical to what our bodies naturally produce. What is wrong with that? It means they are foreign to our body. Whereas, compounded, plant hormones are identical and naturally produced by our body.

Does everyone over a certain age need hormone replacement therapy? Not necessarily. There are many reasons we may/may not need hormone therapy. This is why it is important when you are contemplating hormone replacement therapy that you work with someone who will take a holistic approach. Stress, diet, weight, and exercise are all important factors in gaining and maintaining hormone balance. Proper assessment of hormones levels via saliva testing is also extremely important.

Do not make hasty decisions. No hormone therapy is without risks. Educate yourself and become your own advocate. After all, it is your health!
